Floating road boundaries

自宅から駅へ向かう道路の途中、住宅街の中にこの場所はひっそりと存在している。交通量の多い道路であるがこの場所に差し掛かると道幅が狭まり、通行者は自動車を避けるために一旦路肩に立ち止まらなければならない。道路の両側には木々が生茂り、古い納屋が時間を忘れたように佇んでいる。私にとってこの場所は、駅と自宅の間の連続的な風景が自分の身体感覚と接点を持つ瞬間として記憶されている。
On the road from my house to the station, this place exists quietly in a residential area. The road is a busy one, but when it comes to this spot, the width of the road narrows and passersby must stop on the shoulder to avoid cars. The road is lined with trees on both sides and old barn that seem to have lost track of time. For me, this place is remembered as the moment when the continuous landscape between the station and my home made contact with my physical senses.
Current Situation
道路を挟んで東西に向かい合う２つの土地の現況図である。道路東側はシラカシ、ケヤキといった木々による典型的な屋敷林となっており、地面には古い落葉が堆積している。一方西側は農家の庭先であり、敷地と道路は竹垣によって区切られている。足元では生育力の強いリュウヒゲ、そして竹垣の後ろではマサキやカナメといった常緑低木が垣根を構成し、さらにその奥に は庭の手入れに使われるであろう資材や道具が置かれた納谷がある。竹垣は竹とシュロ縄による簡素な作りであるが、部材の新旧が混在していること、稀に園芸用の支柱や塩ビパイプ、すずらんテープ等が応急処置的に使用されていることなどから、長年にわたり日常的に補修されていることが窺える。
The figure shows the current condition of the two lots facing east and west across the road. The east side of the road is a typical compound forest with Japanese white oaks and zelkova trees, and the ground is covered with old fallen leaves. On the west side is a farmer's yard, separated from the road by a bamboo fence. The strong growth of mondo glass at their feet and evergreen shrubs such as Japanese spindle and Japanese photinia behind the bamboo fence make up the hedge. Further in, there is a barn where materials and tools that would be used to maintain the garden are located. The bamboo fence is simply constructed of bamboo and palm rope, but the mix of old and new components and the occasional use of gardening poles, PVC pipe, and tin tape as a first aid measure suggest that it has been repaired on a daily basis over the years.

この場所におけるある一日の、車を避ける通行者の軌跡と立ち止まった位置を示した図である。通行者の「車を避ける」行為の蓄積によって歩行者と植物のせめぎ合いが生じており、道路と敷地の境界は常に揺 らいでいる。通行者の行動の軌跡は、東側では背の高い木々の幹の位置や枝ぶりに、西側では既存の竹垣の描くカーブに影響を受けていることがわかる。
The figure shows the trajectory of pedestrians avoiding cars observed on a day at this location, and the locations where they stopped to avoid cars. The accumulation of pedestrians' conduct "avoiding cars" creates a struggle between pedestrians and vegetation, and the boundary between the road and the site is shaking. It can be seen that the trajectory of pedestrians' passage is influenced by the position and branching of the trunks of tall trees on the east side, and by the curve drawn by the existing bamboo fence on the west side.
Reconfiguration of bamboo fence
記録された歩行者の行動の軌跡に沿うように竹垣を再構成し、道路の両側に配置する。竹垣の描く曲線は歩行者ための待避場所を作りつつ、欅の若木やリュウヒゲを守る囲いとなる。竹垣の形態は恒久的なものではなく、植物の生育状況や通行者の軌跡の変化を映すように、これまでと同様に敷地所有者によって日常的な改変と補修が継続されることを期待する。
I will reconfigure the bamboo fences to follow the trajectory of recorded pedestrian activity and place them on both sides of the road. The curves of the bamboo fence will create a shelter for the pedestrians, while providing an enclosure to protect the vegetation of young zelkova trees and mondo glasses. The form of the bamboo fence is not permanent and will continue to be modified and repaired on a daily basis by the property owner to accommodate changes in plant growth and the trajectory of pedestrians.
再構成された竹垣のイメージを示したスケッチである。通過者と敷地の間に生まれる接点はより強固なものとして、それぞれの身体的な記憶に刻まれる。
This sketch shows the image of the reconstructed bamboo fence. The contact point created between the passerby and the site is more solidified and etched into the physical memory of each.
